If horses eat a lot of sand and soil, their intestines can be severely damaged in the long term. Starhorse psyllium husks can counteract this problem when used two to three times a year. Small amounts of ingested sand and soil are easily excreted. However, if larger quantities are eaten frequently, this can result in diarrhoea, intestinal sluggishness, constipation and even severe colic. Psyllium husks can be fed to counteract this. Due to their enormous swelling capacity, psyllium husks contain a particularly high mucilage content, which absorbs indigestible sand, soil or toxins and excretes them naturally. This self-cleansing function allows the horse's intestines to recover and regenerate. A preventative "psyllium cure" over a period of approx. 30 days 2-3 times a year is recommended.

It is usually not easy for a horse owner to determine whether his horse's intestinal tract is burdened with excessive amounts of sand and soil. Here, the vet Dr Faulstich from the Brandenburg Horse Clinic recommends a simple but very effective self-test. Pick up 6 fresh horse apples from a pile and stir/shake them in half a litre of water until the apples are completely dissolved in the water. Then wait briefly so that the sand can sink to the bottom. Carefully pour off the water. Under no circumstances should the result of the test show more than the amount of a normal tablespoon of sand.

Horse with approx. 600kg LG:
Soak 50g in 1 litre of water for at least 1 hour.
Depending on the paddock and feeding, it is recommended to feed psyllium two to three times a year for 1 month each time as a preventative measure.
It is not advisable to feed psyllium permanently, as it will otherwise lose its effect.
