Product information "Keralit Hufhärter 250ml"
How does Keralit Hoof Strengthener help with hoof problems?
Keralit Hoof Strengthener is a liquid combination of active ingredients that stabilises and strengthens the proteins found in the hoof horn - in particular the scaffold protein keratin. The keratin molecules, as the main component of the horn, then form more new bonds with neighbouring molecules and protein chains, while existing bonds are protected by an embedded active ingredient. The result is a significant increase in the strength and abrasion resistance of the hoof horn without impairing the hoof mechanism or the natural water balance. Unlike many other hoof protection products, e.g. UV varnishes or adhesives, oils or even grease, Keralit Hoof Protector does not leave a water-impermeable coating. Hoof strengthener before and after for hooves breaking out due to rot
The Keralit hoof strengthener only stabilises the keratin molecules directly on the horn surface, so that the layer thickness of the stabilised horn is approx. 0.4-0.5 mm for healthy horn (see also Vet. med. diss. B. Monhart, Zurich 2002). The hoof stabiliser can penetrate cracks and crevices more easily due to its thin liquid form. This prevents further horn decomposition processes even in the case of covered horn damage, such as under the horseshoe.
Only the horn that is directly exposed to abrasion or harmful substances such as ammonia, bacteria and fungi is stabilised. There is no unnatural hardening of the horn or drying out, which would mean a reduction in the elasticity of the horn capsule.
For which horses is Keralit Huffestiger suitable?
Keralit hoof conditioner can basically be used for all horses, ponies, donkeys and other hoofed animals. In zoological gardens, for example, it is also used to treat rhinoceroses and tortoise shells.
For bare-hoofed horses to strengthen the sole and white line. To reduce horn abrasion in horses with insufficient horn growth and poor horn quality. For shod horses with loose shoes. For cracked horn walls to preserve horn substance and horn capsule. For sensitive horses as a replacement for hoof insoles. For all horses with too low heels and positional faults, in the case of white line decomposition (see illustration below), in the case of hollow and loose walls and for laminitis horses to strengthen the white line.
Please follow the instructions for use on the packaging. The following instructions are not a substitute for these.Keralit Hoof Conditioner is simply applied to the hoof with a bristle brush.
Keralit Hoof Conditioner acts directly on the hoof edge, hoof sole and white line.
Keralit Hoof Strengthener strengthens the horn and makes it much more durable. After just two weeks of use, you will notice a slightly shiny appearance of the horn in these areas as well as a firmer sound of the hooves on hard ground. The horn abrasion of bare hoofed horses is greatly reduced. The bearing edge, sole and white line become much firmer and more resilient. The shoes of shod horses sit more firmly and the hoof is protected.
The use of Keralit Hoof Strengthener greatly reduces the harmful effects of micro-organisms such as those that cause white line disease (decomposition of the white line), as the horn becomes indigestible for the micro-organisms responsible. This is particularly important for horn that is already damaged. Here, horn substance that is still usable is stabilised and further damage is prevented.
The Keralit hoof strengthener is applied to barehoofed horses from underneath on the bearing edge, the white line and, if the horse is able-bodied, also on the sole. Brush in from the side approx. - ? of the hoof wall height.
For shod horses, brush the hoof wall up to and including the nail holes. The hoof strengthener should be able to penetrate into the old nail holes in particular and run under the shoe. The sole of the hoof can also be treated if necessary. This can replace the use of insoles and leather soles.
Treatment is usually carried out 1-2 times a week. In the case of extreme horn decomposition, every other day at first. Bottle with 250ml, sufficient for approx. 3-4 months (warmblood, barehoof). For shod horses up to 6 months. Very often (especially in the internet forums) the question arises about the use on wet horn.
The hoof strengthener can also be used on moist horn without any problems. However, the absorption capacity of the horn is then limited, so that more frequent application, but with less hoof strengthener, is advisable. Application to soaking wet or freshly greased hooves is less sensible.
Another frequently asked question is the use of Keralit Hoof Conditioner in the frog area. In principle, the hoof strengthener is absolutely harmless to the frog horn. The instructions for use only advise against continuous use of hoof strengthener on the frog for the following reason:
The frog horn is an amorphous, i.e. in contrast to the wall horn, non-directional soft horn with approx. 40% water content. Ideally, the frog should have a rubbery-soft, elastic consistency. Due to changing environmental conditions (rain and dryness), the hardness of the jet varies extremely. This is completely normal. In extremely dry conditions in summer, the hoof horn, especially the soft horn of the frog, becomes much harder. The frog can then only perform its cushioning and hoof-widening function to a lesser extent. The soft horn on the surface also reacts to the hoof strengthener by stabilising, which is inappropriate for a frog substance that has already hardened through drying. There is therefore no reason why hoof stabiliser should not be used in the frog area if it is actually too soft. (If in doubt, ask your vet, farrier or hoof trimmer)
Please note:
The Keralit hoof strengthener is not suitable for children's hands.
