Newborn foals do not yet have antibodies against infections. These are only produced in sufficient quantities in the body after 3 to 5 weeks. In order for the foal to remain healthy during this time, it needs antibodies from the colostrum.
If it receives no or too little colostrum from the mother mare, this must be remedied as quickly as possible, as the antibodies can only penetrate the intestinal wall on the first day after birth. In the first 12 hours after birth, absorption is very good; after 24 hours, the body can hardly absorb any antibodies. Pavo Colostrum is specially formulated for this situation.

If the foal refuses colostrum, you can stimulate its appetite by putting a little sugar on its tongue.
Do not force the foal to eat by bending its head backwards. This will prevent the foal from swallowing well and there is a risk of milk getting into the lungs.
Do not give more than 500 ml of Biestmilch per hour. Excessive intake can lead to intestinal disorders.
Pay attention to hygiene. Prepare the milk with clean hands and rinse the teat, bottle and sippy cups well after use.
Heat one litre of mare's milk or Pavo foal milk to lukewarm temperature (38-40°C). If you do not have mare's milk or Pavo foal milk available, semi-skimmed milk can be used. Do not use only water for the preparation, as water does not contain any vitamins.
Then add the entire contents of one packet of Pavo Biestmilch and stir until everything has dissolved.
Give your baby approx. 250 ml of lukewarm Biestmilch every two hours using a teat bottle or a bucket with a teat
It is best to warm the Biestmilch in a water bath. This will prevent flocculation and burning. Do not heat Biestmilch in the microwave!
Give the colostrum directly after the foal is born (preferably within 3 hours, but no later than 12 hours after birth)
For weak foals or foals that have not received Biestmilch from the mare, it is recommended to administer a second bag of Pavo Biestmilch.
Contact your vet within 24 hours.
