The standard values for respiratory rate serve as guidelines for assessing the respiratory health of a horse. In large horses, the average respiratory rate is in the range of 8 to 16 breaths per minute. This range reflects the normal function of the respiratory system and serves as a reference value for assessing changes or abnormalities.

In ponies, due to their smaller lung volume compared to large horses, the normal respiratory rate can be up to 24 breaths per minute, without this necessarily indicating a disease or abnormality.
