The causes of such diseases are metabolic blockages of varying degrees. To a large extent, these are due to an oversupply of carbohydrates from cereals such as oats, barley, maize or spelt and the associated obesity of affected horses. Carbohydrates are also generally the cause of such diseases during the grazing period. Contrary to the still widespread belief that too much protein is the cause of laminitis in the grazing season, fructans, which belong to the carbohydrate fraction, are among the triggers. In addition to sufficient daily exercise, a feed with the lowest possible starch and sugar content can be used to support the prevention and rehabilitation of these diseases.
